We can’t watch what is happening right now to our fellow Human Beings in the US Black Community right now and not feel intense pain. The hard truth is that this issue is everywhere. Discrimination and a fear of ‘the other’ has a long and storied presence in our human history.
Can this be a point where we make that change?
At Cirkularis8 we value diversity over assimilation. Our relentless focus on mental health is an equalizer, because we all have hopes and dreams and fears, no matter what our skin colour is or who we love.
The problems our fellow Humans in the Black Community are facing are deep, historic and systemic. Even in recent memory, from the lopsided devastation of Hurricane Katrina to Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Ahmed Abrey and George Floyd, and countless others. The profiling, the discrimination cannot be tolerated or shrugged off.
It’s not enough to be ‘not racist’. We must be Anti-Racist. That means confronting our own internal conditioning. That means calling out discrimination, wherever we see it.
Colin Kaepernick took a knee to peacefully and respectfully speak out against this systemic issue and we join him, salute him and call on all our partners, clients and team to emulate his courage. And many already are. His black-listing is further evidence of the systemic racial issue, and we mustn’t cower away from what he sought to show us. Despite being shut out by his industry, his presence looms large over this moment.
We don’t have all the answers, in fact, we have very few. One thing is certain, you can count on Cirkularis8 to continue to be a relentless champion of diversity.
